MSME/ Udyog Aadhar is the old process for the registration of small-scale industries under the MSME. Before the implementation of the MSMED Act, of 2006, the small-scale industries had to fill two forms- EM-I & EM-II for registration. This process was very lengthy and required a lot of paperwork. The government introduced Udyog Aadhar for online registration of the SSI/ MSME registration. The industries registered with Udyog Aadhar could enjoy the benefits provided by the government under several schemes.

UAM (Udyog Aadhar Memorandum)

Udyog Aadhar Memorandum is a single-page registration form in self-authentication format for the verification of details related to the enterprise such as Aadhaar, bank account and other basic minimum details required. 

  • It is an easy and affordable paperless online registration that can be done conveniently without the need of filling multiple forms.
  • The UAM replaced the EM-I & EM-II which was required for the registration of small scale industries under SSI registration. 
  • The UAM is not mandatory for all MSME but compulsory for all Medium enterprises.
  • After the submission of the UAM form, the Udyog Aadhar number was generated for the unique identification of the enterprise. 
  • There was no restriction on filing more than one UAM with the same Aadhar. 
  • The UAM form does not require filling up of a lot of forms, unlike the previous process where the EM-I & EM-II was required to avail the other benefits offered by the government under various schemes.
  • UAM provides benefits of collateral-free loans for any industry that registers and qualifies under an MSME.
  • The UAM reduces the hassle of paperwork while applying for MSME schemes. Yet, additional documents are to be presented when required.
  • The applicant can use UAM to avail other eligible general Government subsidies.

Udyog Aadhar Registration Certificate

Udyog Aadhar registration certificate is the certificate provided to the MSME after the registration along with the unique registration number. Udyog Aadhar is the unique number provided to the enterprise. 

Guidelines for filling out the online Udyog Aadhar

  1. Aadhar number
  2. Name of the owner as mentioned on Aadhar issued by the UIDAI
  3. Social Category- You must fill your social category i.e., ST, SC, or OBC.
  4. Name of the enterprise- Fill in the name of the enterprise by which your enterprise is known to the customers. In case you have more than one enterprise with a different name you can file for more than one Udyog Aadhar with the same Aadhar number.
  5. Type of Organisation- You must select the appropriate type of organization for your enterprise.
  6. Postal Address- You must give your appropriate postal address with the correct State, District, Pin Code, etc.
  7. Date of commencement- The date on which your enterprise was commenced.
  8. Previous Registration details- Previous registration details of EM-I or EM-II.
  9. Bank details- The bank account details and its IFSC code.
  10. The activities- The activities related to the business- Manufacturing or Service Sector.
  11. NIC code- The NIC(National Industrial Classification) code was required which is provided by the government to track the further proceedings of the business.
  12. Person employed- The number of employees employed in your organization.
  13. Investment in Plant & Machinery 
  14. DIC- The location of DIC


  • Udyog Aadhar Memorandum was filed online. In exceptional cases where online filling of the form was not possible, Annexure 1 was filled and submitted to the concerned DIC(District Industry Centre) 
  • The existing enterprises which had filed for the EM-I or EM-II both need not fill the UAM form but could fill the form if wished to file the form.
  • The Aadhar number of the key representative of the enterprise should be provided.
  • A person could file more than one Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum using the same Aadhaar number.
  • The Udyog Aadhar number shall be filed based on a self-declaration basis.

NOTE: Now you can print udyam certificate through udyam portal.


Earlier, the process for registration of the small scale industries was very lengthy and lots of documentation was required for the authentication. Later, the government introduced Udyog Aadhar for the registration of MSME companies. Under the Udyog Aadhar process, a person could apply for more than one UAM with the same Aadhar. The Udyog Aadhar process has been updated to the Udyam process. Under the new Udyam process the registration can be done only once with a single Aadhar card and other activities related to the enterprise has to be documented under the Udyam Certificate.
